Lens adapters
An lens adapter is an accessory used to connect lenses with different lens mounts. Lens mounts are the mechanical connections between your camera body and the Lens.
Lens adapters are useful when you want to use lenses that are not directly compatible with your camera. This can have various reasons, for example:
- Mount incompatibility: Different camera manufacturers use different lens mounts for their lenses. With a lens adapter, you can attach a lens with a specific lens mount to a camera with a different lens mount.
- Lens versatility: A lens adapter gives you the opportunity to use lenses from different manufacturers and benefit from their specific characteristics and features. For example, you can use vintage lenses on modern digital cameras.
- Sensor size adaptation: Some lens adapters allow you to mount lenses designed for cameras with a larger sensor onto cameras with a smaller sensor. This reduces the image frame, enabling you to utilize effects like focal length extension.
When using lens adapters, it's important to consider that they introduce additional mechanical elements between the camera and the lens. This can impact autofocus speed, exposure metering, and other functions. Not all combinations of lens and camera are possible, and sometimes specific adapters may not be available. Additionally, the adapter must maintain the flange focal distance, which is the distance between the lens mount and the film or image sensor, in order to achieve infinity focus.
