Heliopan ND Filters

What are ND filters?

  • A gray ND filter on your lens acts like "sunglasses" in front of your eyes.
  • An ND filter reduces the incident light.
  • It enables pictures to be taken during the day with a long exposure time and a larger aperture.
  • The result is, for example, soft water, streaky clouds and popular places devoid of people.
  • Ideal for landscape photography but also suitable for portrait photography.
  • Promotes creative photography.

What is an ND filter?

An ND filter is used to reduce the incident light. It works in front of the lens like sunglasses in front of our eyes. This reduces the incident light in order to avoid "dazzling" the camera sensor if you choose a short exposure time in daylight. An ND or gray filter is used to avoid overexposing the resulting image and thus making it unusable. ND means neutral density. In this case, neutral means that the filter has no influence on color reproduction or intensity. These filters are colored gray in different strengths and intensities.

Use of ND filters?

ND filters are often used in landscape photography when long exposure times are necessary. For example when taking pictures of a lake, where the surface should appear smooth, or when depicting flowing water like a waterfall.

There are also possible uses for ND filters in portrait photography, e.g. when working with an open aperture (for a blurred background) and a short exposure time. Because especially during an outdoor shoot, you can work against extreme incidence of light, e.g. when the sun is low.
